Why do bats hang upside down?
Bats hang upside down because it makes taking off super easy!

Pip’s answer
- Bats hang upside down because it makes taking off super easy!
- They just let go, drop down, and whoosh, open their wings to fly!
- Most bats can't run or jump well, so taking off from the ground is hard.
- Wow-ee, their feet lock tight, so they even sleep hanging upside down!
For grown-ups
Bats cannot easily take off from the ground because their wings do not generate enough lift from a standstill and their legs are not built for running. Hanging upside down lets them simply drop into flight. Special tendons lock their toes so they can hang while asleep without using energy.
