How do birds fly?
Birds have super light bones and strong, strong wings!

Pip’s answer
- Birds have super light bones and strong, strong wings!
- When they flap, flap, flap, their wings push air down and back.
- The air pushes them up and forward. Whoosh, that is flying!

Can you flap your arms like a bird, buddy?
For grown-ups
Bird wings are curved and angled so that moving air is pushed downward, and the air pushes the bird up in return; this force is called lift. Flapping also drives the bird forward. Birds have light, partly hollow bones, powerful chest muscles and feathers that create a smooth wing surface.
Ask your child: Can we watch a bird take off and see how it uses its wings?
