Why don't bikes fall over?
Bikes stay up because the rider keeps steering to balance!

Pip’s answer
- Bikes stay up because the rider keeps steering to balance!
- When the bike tips a little, you turn the wheel that way to catch it.
- Rolling forward makes balancing much easier than standing still.
- Ooh, your brain does all that balancing super fast without you thinking!
For grown-ups
Riders balance a bike mostly by steering: when it starts to lean, they turn the front wheel slightly in that direction, bringing the wheels back under them. A moving bike's geometry also helps it steer itself a little. That's why balancing is much easier when moving than when still.
Ask your child: Is it easier to balance on a bike when it's moving or standing still?
