Why does a spinning top stay up?
A spinning top stays up because spinning fast keeps it steady.

Pip’s answer
- A spinning top stays up because spinning fast keeps it steady.
- When it isn't spinning, it just tips over onto its side. Bonk!
- Spinning makes it want to keep standing the same way, so it balances.
- Hehe, as it slows down, it wobbles, wobbles, then falls asleep on the floor!
For grown-ups
A spinning top has angular momentum, which makes it resist changes to the direction of its spin axis, so it stays upright. Friction slowly slows the top, and as it slows it starts to wobble (precession) until it falls over.
Ask your child: Can you make a top spin longer on a smooth floor or a rug?
