Why does my tummy growl?
Your tummy growls when it squeezes and pushes air and juice around.

Pip’s answer
- Your tummy growls when it squeezes and pushes air and juice around.
- Those squeezes help move food along, like a gentle hug.
- When your tummy is empty, rumbles sound louder, like an empty drum. Grrrumble!
- Wow-ee, your tummy can talk without saying a single word!
For grown-ups
Stomach growling, called borborygmi, happens when muscles in the stomach and intestines squeeze to move food, liquid and gas along. It's often louder when the stomach is empty because there's less food to muffle the sound. Hunger signals also make the gut muscles more active.
Ask your child: Does your tummy growl more before breakfast or after dinner?
