Why do horses sleep standing up?
Horses can nap standing up so they are ready to run away fast.

Pip’s answer
- Horses can nap standing up so they are ready to run away fast.
- Their legs can lock, like a stand, so they do not tip over.
- For deep dreamy sleep, horses lie down in the grass for a little while.
- Ooh, horses are such good nappers they can doze on their feet!

Can you stand still and do a big pretend horsey yawn?
For grown-ups
Horses have a special 'stay apparatus' of tendons and ligaments that locks their legs, so they can doze standing with little effort. This let wild horses run from predators quickly. They still need to lie down for short periods of deep (REM) sleep.
