Why do crabs walk sideways?
Crabs walk sideways because their legs bend best that way, buddy!
Pip’s answer
- Crabs walk sideways because their legs bend best that way, buddy!
- Their legs sit along their sides, so stepping sideways is quick and easy.
- Walking sideways helps them zip into holes and under rocks. Zoom!
- Wow-ee! Some crabs can walk forward too, but sideways is their super speed!

For grown-ups
Most crabs' legs are attached to the sides of their body and bend outward, so moving sideways is fastest and easiest. Walking sideways also lets them dash into rock cracks quickly. Some crabs can walk forward slowly too.
