Why do we find dinosaur bones?
We find dinosaur bones because some got buried in mud long, long ago.

Pip’s answer
- We find dinosaur bones because some got buried in mud long, long ago.
- Over a very long time, the bones slowly turned into hard stone.
- Wind and rain wear the rock away, and the bones peek out. Peekaboo!
- Ooh, scientists use tiny brushes to clean bones older than many mountains!
Try it together
Can you pretend to brush a dino bone, super gently?
For grown-ups
When dinosaurs died near water, some were buried by mud or sand. Over millions of years, minerals in groundwater replaced the bone material, turning it into stone fossils. As wind and water erode rock, fossils can become exposed, and paleontologists carefully dig them out with brushes and picks.
Ask your child: Would you like to be a fossil hunter? What would you hope to find?
