Why is mud squishy?
Mud is squishy because it's dirt mixed with lots of water. Squish!

Pip’s answer
- Mud is squishy because it's dirt mixed with lots of water. Squish!
- Dirt is made of lots of teeny tiny bits, some even smaller than sand.
- Water slips between the bits, so they slide around each other easily.
- Ooh, when the water dries up, mud can turn hard as a brick!
For grown-ups
Mud is soil mixed with water. Soil contains very fine particles like clay and silt. Water fills the spaces between particles and lets them slide past each other, making mud soft and squishy. When it dries, the particles pack tightly, and mud can harden like brick.
