Why does it snow?
It snows when tiny water drops in a cold cloud freeze into ice crystals!

Pip’s answer
- It snows when tiny water drops in a cold cloud freeze into ice crystals!
- The crystals stick together and grow into snowflakes.
- When they get heavy, they drift down through cold air and stay frozen.
- Wow-ee, every snowflake had a long, twirly trip all the way from a cloud!
Try it together
Can you flutter your fingers down like falling snow?
For grown-ups
Snow forms when the air in a cloud is below freezing. Water vapor freezes onto tiny particles, forming ice crystals that grow and clump into snowflakes. If the air all the way to the ground stays cold enough, the flakes reach us as snow instead of melting into rain.
Ask your child: What do you think happens to snowflakes if they fall through warm air?
